Why Vinyasa Flow Yoga?

Vinyasa Flow Yoga is my absolute favorite style of yoga; thus, why I became RYT certified as a vini yoga instructor through YogaFit's teacher instructor training.

There are all kinds of yoga these days and the "western" influence is definitely evolving yoga giving way to many different experiences through the various styles. Those who crave a "traditional" yoga experience often gravitate towards Iyengar or Ashtanga where there is little to no music in class. It's all good as long as we find whatever style works for us. There is a style for everyone!!!

My classes often incorporate a variety of inspiring and upbeat music with different series of "flows and breathing." Because I am so moved by dancing and music, vinyasa flow incorporates these experiences through body-mind-soul movement!

I look forward to seeing you in class....soon I hope!

Many Changes...

This March, I welcomed a baby boy...Jasper Dean Elenbaas. He's my precious jewel and came into the world, literally, through HAPPY BABY'S POSE. He's taught me a lot about love, giving/giving/giving and what the body is capable of doing (especially during childbirth). I've also had to give myself grace when trying to "build back" my strength and pre-baby-self. But, in the NOW is where we find true JOY and ACCEPTANCE.

So, LOVE who you are TODAY.
HUG someone you care about TODAY.
Take a DEEP BREATH and let go of stress RIGHT NOW!
Smile. Now. EVERY DAY.
This can be your YOGA PRACTICE...TODAY.

Health- a way of life....

Seattle...the city of health- bike lanes, yoga studios everywhere, smoothie shops, hiking trails, REI, no more smoking in bars, runners, kayaks, skiing/snowboarding, etc. We are truly BLESSED to live here. Now, find a friend who will help keep you active and set up a "health date" to take a walk, run, ride a bike or hike a mountain. Explore this city with friends and have fun doing it while practicing a healthy lifestyle!

I have a running buddy who I meet every Friday morning before work. We run 4 miles whether it's raining or windy or dark. Without her, I would not run so early. But it starts my day off with vitality, strength and joy from my physical wellness to a jump-start in my mind for the day! Thank you, Camille, who has been running with me for 3 years now...

YOGA DAY USA 2010- benefiting HAITI

Yoga Day USA 2010 was a wonderful success inside the pavilion at the Olympic Sculpture Park on Saturday, Jan. 23rd. 70 amazing yogis showed up to celebrate health/well-being in the new year. With open hearts, we practiced vinyasa flow yoga together and became a powerful force of one...of giving back...of experiencing...of being honest with our intentions.

Inside the glass walls of the pavilion, we became MOVING ART through asana as we gazed out to the still art--sculptures and snowcapped mountains framing the Puget Sound.
Special thanks to the generous space provided by the Olympic Sculpture Park, coupons provided by lucy, Custom Smoothie and Bath & Body, as well as those individuals who donated funds to help the relief effort in Haiti. I was so honored to teach this class and also participate in the joy of karma yoga with you all! NAMASTE!

Fall Into a a better flow of life... of Yoga

Fall is here!
With wet grass around our feet, 16 of us met in the crisp fall morning air to start our day in a beautiful ryhthm of vinyasa flow yoga at the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle. Breath met cool air and "flow" of Ujjai brought heat into our bodies to wake up mind-body-soul. Big cotton swaps of clouds floated along blue sky. The Puget Sound sparkled with silent biddings of a new day. We were the few to start our Sundays off with yoga....barefoot in the park.

Fall is here!
The cooler weather often slows us down. Wearing our sweaters and hats, we tend to consume more food/drink to stay warm. Remember to "fall into a better flow of life" by making a committment to stay true to our practice...to our health...to being vibrant beings. We face the changing of seasons with joy and confidence.

Fall is here. We show up. We move. We breath. We smile. We go out into the world as lights even when everything around us gets darker sooner. We flow with our souls. We. Yogis.

Yoga Day USA benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation today

Yoga Day USA- thousands of yogis all over the country enjoyed practicing yoga! In the spirit of karma yoga, all classes were free (or nearly free). The class I led at Maya Whole Health raised money to benefit the kids struggling with life-threatening conditions and who are waiting for wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Our class raised $260 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Special thanks to:
* Maya Whole Health Studio for allowing us to utilize this beautiful studio space
* Lululemon who donated stylish headbands to those who participated
* Custom Smoothie who provided coupons for healthy smoothies
* All my wonderful students who showed up and gave of their day/time/hearts/money

Every day should be a day to look for opportunities to GIVE BACK!!! Carpe diem!

STAYING CALM THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS

Glistening lights, Jingle Bell runs, carols and singing, extra cookies in the office, "everything's on sale," fa la la la la, red and green, eggnog, family, Santa's naughty or nice list, nativity scenes, Christmas trees, more family, laughter, stress, gifts, memories, wishing...

Ah, the holidays are upon us. Around us. We can begin to appreciate the joy of the season, but be aware not to let our joy become depleted while we are in the season. Remember...3 deep breaths. Every morning is a fresh start. Listen to our bodies! Rest often. Laugh much. Sleep in. Give hugs. Recieve hugs. Keep doing yoga and let go of things that worry or stress us. We can only be in the very moment we are in so choose to ENJOY. Appreciate. Learn to say "no" when enough is enough (with food, committments, people...)

Our bodies are our treasures. Our gift to ourselves this season should be pure LOVE. For our health, for our many blessings, for family and friends and let go the need to buy. Accept the need to give (love, forgiveness, something creative from you, to charity, to this world).

And somewhere along our path, we will smile and make it through the holidays. Peacefully. Together....

Fresh Start with Each Breath

We are surrounded by change. The leaves are changing colors. We are all ready for a change in politics. It's October so we are at the edge each day with expectations of rain, but we are enjoying this nice "fall" weather for a "change." What changes are we experiencing within?

Each day is new. Though we may relive some features of a daily routine, we always have the choice to make change. Maybe today we let go of worry. Maybe today we smile at a stranger. Maybe today we forgive. Maybe today we are ready to accept who we are in this world instead of wishing to be someone or somewhere else. Maybe today we find solace in silence instead of rushing to the next thing on our "to do" list. Maybe today...we change.

In yoga, we remind ourselves to stay present with each breath. Each breath we take is a gift. It's an opportunity to move us forward into the next moment. We have the opportunity to take a fresh start with each breath. Remarkable.

In our yoga class today...10 of us at Gasworks Park...experienced change. Some of us decided to exercise at 2 p.m. (the mid-day slump) instead of lounging on the couch watching football or re-runs of a favorite show. Some of us decided to show up to take care of ourselves...the yoke of yoga...body/soul/mind connection. This change starts with a breath. A decision. A step into the flow of life...of yoga...of new experiences. New friends. What can we all decide to let go of at this moment to change for the better? What can we all decide to embrace within ourselves so we can change our attitudes about who we are so that we can love ourselves, love the world and love others that much better. This, my friends, is the beautiful transformation of change....like a butterfly descends from a cacoon...every day we can blossom, grow and change!
